Michael is the owner and principal lens design consultant for Young Optical Design. His journey in lens design began in graduate school with the design of a non-imaging optic for PMT detection and analysis and layout for a super-resolution laser scanning microscope

Michael has worked as a Sr. Research Associate for the University of Colorado Denver Anschutz Medical Campus (UCD) in the Gibson lab where he develops technologies for nonlinear imaging of brain tissue. While at UCD, Michael contributed to pulse compression technologies and the invention of a novel compressor design.

Before joining the Gibson group at UCD, Michael worked for Honeywell Quantum Solutions (HQS) as a Sr. Physicist where he received multiple awards for his optical systems designs for laser-beam delivery and trapped-ion imaging and detection.

He obtained his B.Sc. and Ph.D. from the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) in engineering physics and applied physics, respectively. His dissertation was on “Developments in Multifocal Multiphoton Microscopy with Single Element Detection” which presented advances in enhanced resolution techniques using spatial frequency modulated imaging. These and additional advances were recognized with an outstanding paper award by SPIE.
